  About Us

It's called Broadland Youth Choir because we rehearse in Broadland!

Youth - because the members of the choir are all of school age.

Choir - because that's exactly what it is - a ground of young people who get together every week because they like singing.

Broadland Youth Choir was formed in 1992 by its present Musical Director, Carole Tims GTCL, ARCM. BYC has established a reputation for polished musical singing of the highest standard. We have over 200 pieces of music in our library and an extensive and a very varied repertoire, singing everything from Bach to the Beatles and John Rutter to Andrew Lloyd Webber! There are about 40 young singers in the choir, both girls and boys.

The BYC have performed in an amazing mixture of venues, which include Norwich Cathedral, Norwich Roman Catholic Cathedral, (where we have also performed Pergolesi's Stabat Mater in entirety - a feast which we achieved once more in Easter 2006 in Salhouse Parish Church). Bury St Edmunds Cathedral, Queen Elizabeth Hall, (South Bank), Kings Lynn corn Exchange, Cromer Pier, Norwich Theatre Royal and many other Churches and venues around Norfolk.

Our repertoire presently contains Pergolesi's Stabat Mater, 'You whose day it is' song-cycle by Dan Kingman (America) African Trilogy (Gwyn Arch), 'Sanctus' By Schubert, 'All things Bright and Beautiful' and 'For the Beauty of the Earth' By John Rutter (other Rutter works include 'Gaelic Blessing', Mary's Carol' and 'Candlelight Carol'), 'Rhythm of Life' (Cy Coleman), 'On Wings of Song' (Mendelssohn), 'Danny Boy' (Trad), 'To be or not to be' (Irving Jullman), ' Memory' & 'McCavity' from 'Cats' by Andrew Lloyd Webber and the entire 'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat' which we performed at the Theatre Royal, Norwich, In October, with Bill Kenwight's company, for the seventh time. Our Christmas repertoire is also extensive, covering both sacred and secular carols and songs; for example; 'Silent Night', 'In Dulci Jubilo', 'Christmas Lullaby' (Rutter), 'The Flowering Manger' (Percy Buck), 'The Snowman' (Howard Blake), 'Winter Wonderland', 'The Holly and the Ivy' (Rutter), 'Gaudete' and many , many others.

Broadland Youth Choir gained the Gold standard choir exam, from Trinity College, London in December 2003 with Honours. The group participated in the Llangollen International Eisteddfod in July 2004 where they were placed high on the list of world-class performances. Prior to that they were invited to sing with the National Festival of Music for Youth at London's South Bank in July 2003 - performing with 'The nation's most talented singers'.

BYC's repertoire is large and encompasses many different styles. All programmes are performed from memory. The senior choir numbers 35 voices ages 11 to 18. With the junior choir, who usually starts at 7 years old the number rises to between 40 and 50. There are also a smaller chamber choir, Bel Canto, in which there are only twelve members. Rehearsals would normally be suspended during the school holidays, but in 2006 the BYC rehearsed into August with their customary enthusiasm once again as they appeared for the seventh time with Bill Kenwright's company in 'Joseph' at the Theatre Royal, Norwich in October. On the success of their previous performances, the BYC were called in at very short notice to the Marina Theatre, Lowestoft, in April of last year, when a crisis left the show without their planned choir, so the choir performed another week of their favourite musical!

The BYC appeared at Norwich Cathedral in August 2005, as they completed a summer music tour together with Horsham Children's Choir, at which they gave the East Anglian premier of the new musical 'Make More Sail', which tells the tale of Nelson's Battle of Trafalgar, and was performed in three places specially connected with the great man - Great Yarmouth, North Walsham and Norwich Cathedral. In June of 2006 they again appeared at the Cathedral, performing the Festival Concert for the two Norwich Cathedrals' Flower Festival.

Our most recent successes have been at the Norfolk County Music Festival, where we gained 2 Highly commended pluses in the Youth Choir section, as did Bel Canto, the Gorleston St Andrew's Festival 2 Distinctions and the SMA and the Gilliard cups, at the Cromer and North Norfolk Music Festival, 4 Distinctions. Many of the choir participated as soloists, and gained several Highly commended and Distinctions between them.

Appearances at St Andrew's Hall, with the EDP Festival of Carols, and with the Norwich Philharmonic Society's Christmas Concert have taken place in past years, and are planned again for Christmas 2007. The BYC also appeared at Christmas 2005 and 2006 at the Pavilion Theatre, Cromer, in the Christmas Seaside Special - a very special venue!

Broadland Youth Choir trains its members musically as well as vocally. They are one of the the very few  secular, independent choirs to run the Royal School of Church Music's 'Voice for Life' scheme, which trains youngsters in music theory as well as vocally. THE BYC is skilled at performing whole concerts together, besides weddings, corporate entertainment, etc.
